Short flood works

COUNCIL has resolved to address the issue of flooding to low-lying businesses in Short Street caused by stormwater drainage.
A $90,000 works program aimed at reducing back-flow flooding will include rehabilitation and relining of the existing 750mm-diameter pipeline servicing Short Street and construction of a penstock, or flood flap, within the system.
Work is required because recent inspections of the existing pipeline showed significant deterioration.
Mayor Peter Besseling believes the option council has adopted addresses the main concerns of the owners and tenants affected within the funds available this financial year.
“While this work will go some way to reducing the flooding experienced it is a minimal works option,” he said. “It does not change the reality that a number of the Short Street properties are at low levels and will still be affected by river flooding.
“Additional medium to long-term options for further improvements will be considered in conjunction with any future redevelopment or road improvements in this area of the Port Macquarie CBD.”
