ANOTHER Port Macquarie school is about to receive a set of flashing lights under the next rollout announced by the NSW Government to increase school zone pedestrian safety.
Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams said the NSW Government was delivering on its commitment to ensure every school in the state would have a set of flashing lights by December 2015.
“I’m delighted that Port Macquarie Public School will receive flashing lights as they provide extra road safety by slowing motorists down around our children and school communities,” Ms Williams said.
“Flashing lights will be installed on William Street and will operate automatically when school zone speed limits are in force on gazetted school days, increasing motorists’ awareness of school zones.”
Ms Williams said since the 2011 State election, school flashing lights had been installed at Tacking Point Public, Hastings Public and Port Macquarie High Schools.
“School zone flashing lights alert drivers they are entering a 40km/h school zone and to slow down reducing the risk of a crash or the severity of a crash if it occurs,” she said.
“Children can be unpredictable and do not always act safely around traffic. They may also take risks in the traffic environment without realising they are doing so.
“Put simply, flashing lights make the roads around our schools safer.”
She said the installation was part of a rollout which would will see a further 101 schools in the state receive flashing lights before the start of the 2014 school year.
