EVER wondered what to do with those unwanted, out-of-date or leftover household chemicals in your kitchen, bathroom, laundry, garage or garden shed?
The Midwaste 2013 Household Chemical Cleanout is the answer.
Midwaste is partnering with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), Transpacific Industries and councils across the region to offer a safe and easy disposal service for unwanted or out-of-date household chemicals.
Locally, the collection will be held on Saturday 16 November between 9am and 3.30pm at the Port Macquarie Hastings Council depot in Koala Street, Port Macquarie.
Hazardous household chemicals eligible for collection include items such as pesticides, paint, garden chemicals (e.g. weed killers), solvents (e.g. paint stripper), household chemicals (e.g. bleach and detergents), smoke detectors, fluorescent light globes and tubes, household batteries, old gas bottles and fire extinguishers.
Items that will not be accepted include tyres, asbestos, general rubbish, empty containers, explosives, flares, mobile phones and infectious waste.
“This is a great opportunity for local residents to get rid of hazardous materials from in and around their homes,” Port Macquarie-Hastings mayor Peter Besseling said.
“We do not want these materials to go to landfill, but we recognise they are hard to dispose of. With funding support from the EPA and in partnership with other councils in our region we can take care of these materials in a way that is safe for the residents and the environment.
“Our contractors Transpacific are specialists and there is even the potential to recycle some containers of materials collected through this service.”
The service is for local residents with domestic quantities of household hazardous chemicals with the first 20kg/litres accepted free of charge.
Local businesses who want to utilise the services of the local contractor at their own cost while they are in the region are asked to contact TPI directly on 0423 827 245 prior to the collection day.
Residents are encouraged to contact Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for more information in relation to the local collection or alternatively to visit www.midwaste.org.au for full details.
