THE search is on again for the best corporate outrigger crew in the Hastings, with only 10 days remaining for paddling hopefuls to stake their claim.
Port Macquarie Maroro Outrigger Club is inviting local businesses and organisations to compete for trophies and bragging rights at its annual Corporate Day on Sunday 24 November.
The event, to be held at the Port marina, is the club’s major fundraiser and promises to be another morning of fun competition on the Hastings River.
Club president Kim Roberts said the day was about having a good time with friends, as well as providing an opportunity for many to try outrigger paddling for the first time.
“We’ve been holding this event for a number of years now and have always appreciated the great support we get from the local community,” Roberts said.
“In recent years we’ve had teams competing from Bonny Hills, Wauchope and Port Macquarie, and we’re hoping again for a strong turnout.
“The funds raised at this event have played a major part in the club’s growing success, which has included state and national titles in the past three years.”
Roberts said anyone could take part in the event, with no experience required.
“All you need is a team of five paddlers, and we take care of the rest, including some basic tuition at the start and a steerer from the club to help each team,” she said.
“The format ensures that everyone gets to race in at least three heats, with semi-finals and finals as well.
“We’ll have food and drinks available throughout the morning, and there are plenty of prizes on offer, including a fancy-dress prize, as well the three coveted trophies.
“The first race usually starts at around 9am and we’ll be finished by 1pm.”
