ABORIGINAL families, parents and carers have another opportunity to participate in a host of practical and interactive workshops and presentations.
The ‘Planting the seeds’ gathering will be held at Yarrawarra Aboriginal Cultural centre at Corindi Beach, midway between Coffs Harbour and Grafton on the Mid North Coast, on 29 and 30 November.
Yarrawarra will also be hosting an open day on the 30 November, making this a great day for families to get out and experience the wonders of art, music and education through play and activities.
Co-ordinator Roxanne Smith said the event was about Aboriginal parents sharing and learning from other Aboriginal parents and carers, exploring what works and how to get the best outcomes.
“Presenters and guest speakers will include young local Aboriginal community people, parents and educators who have relevant experience in early childhood sector and act as role models to provide a positive influence on participants,” she said.
“We are also pleased that the Clarence Regional Library and Muurrbay Language Centre will be providing workshops and sessions for our parents.”
Child care and children’s activities will be provided at the event and some of the sessions have been developed for parents, carers and children to undertake together. Attendance at the gathering is free.
“We have tried to make attendance at the gatherings as simple as possible for families,” Ms Smith said.
Well-known Bundjalung artist Kim Healey has developed the artwork associated with the gathering, planting the seeds of knowledge, love, strength and connection.
“We all have the ability to sow these seeds for ourselves, for our family and friends,” she said. “Nurturing and tending to these seeds we can watch them slowly grow and, with patience and time, harvest the fruit of our dedication and diligence.”
The event is an initiative of Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.
