RESIDENTS of the Port Macquarie-Hastings are being urged to nominate a local citizen or community group for the 2014 Australia Day Awards if they haven’t already done so.
Port Macquarie-Hastings mayor Peter Besseling said nominations would close tomorrow, Friday 29 November.
The Australia Day awards are designed to recognise those individuals and community groups that have gone the extra mile and have made an outstanding contribution to the Port Macquarie-Hastings community.
Awards are presented in four categories: Young Citizen of the Year (16-30 years), Citizen of the Year (31-65 years), Senior Citizen of the Year (65-plus years) and Community Group of the Year.
This year’s winners included Paralympian Ryley Batt as Young Citizen of the year, Dr Ray Hodgson as Citizen of the Year and Helen Ross as Senior Citizen of the Year. The Community Group of the Year award was jointly shared by the Port Macquarie Historical Society and Museum and the Camden Haven Meals on Wheels.
Cr Besseling said the awards provided an opportunity for residents to say thank-you and provide recognition to those people who often worked behind the scenes to make Port Macquarie-Hastings a better place to live.
All nominees must be Australian citizens who live, work or study in the Port Macquarie-Hastings local government area.
The Australia Day sub-committee will judge the award nominees with winners to be honoured at a ceremony to be held on Saturday 25 January.
