PORT Macquarie woman Pam Whytcross is in the running for a major tennis award.
Pam is one of three finalists in the excellence in officiating category of the Australian Tennis awards, which will be presented in Melbourne on Monday 2 December.
Pam has lived in Port Macquarie for the past 11 years and officiating as a tennis referee for more than 25. She was also an excellent tennis player in her own right in her earlier days, reaching a ranking of 75th in the women’s top 100 in the 1980s.
Other finalists in her category include John Blom (Engadine, NSW) and Thomas Sweeney (Benalla, Vic).
Pam said she would be flying to Melbourne for the occasion and thought she had a good chance of taking out her category.
“But you never can tell what the judges are thinking, so if I do win I will be delighted,” she said.
The excellence-in-officiating award is one of a number which will be presented on Monday night, with other awards including the Newcombe Medal, which is presented to Australia’s most outstanding player. Finalists in this category include Samantha Stosur, Bernard Tomic, Lleyton Hewitt, doubles pair Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty and rising star Nick Kyrgios.
“As well as recognising the achievements of Australia’s most outstanding tennis player, the awards celebrate the exceptional accomplishments and contributions of the many tennis communities, coaches, clubs and schools around the country,” Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley said.
The awards will be held at the Crown Palladium.
