RESIDENTS of the Port Macquarie-Hastings are being reminded that puppies and kittens must be microchipped before they are sold or given away.
Council rangers say there have been a number of instances in recent months of people purchasing puppies and kittens privately only to find they haven’t been microchipped, as is required under NSW Companion Animals legislation.
In NSW, all cats and dogs must be microchipped by 12 weeks of age or before being sold or given away – whichever happens first – unless they are exempt. Exempt animals include cats that were born before 1 July 1999 and have not changed owners, working dogs used for tending stock on a rural property and greyhounds currently registered under the Greyhound Racing Act 2009.
