Tim Bonython’s independent surf movie tour initiative is back with the Australian Surf Movie Festival presented by GoPro tour in January and February with two incredible movies, The Journey and Encoded.
Now in its 11th year, the festival is touring Australia with up to 30 stops around the Australian coastline. Each venue provides a unique surf movie experience incorporating local businesses, surfers and music.
Tim’s previous film, Immersion The Movie, won two prestigious awards at the 2013 New York Surf Film Festival held in New York, for best feature film and best cinematography. Immersion was the only film to win two awards on the night.
“Each year I am searching for the greatest moments the ocean can offer,” Tim said.
“When it comes to surfers versus nature and the pure exhilaration of what the ocean can deliver, the southern hemisphere has the greatest playground of options on the planet. It’s seasonal but there’s always so many amazing options to surf and shoot.”
Tim said The Journey and Encoded were also full of wonderful experiences, including amazing footage of surfing icon Kelly Slater in Tasmania.
“Encoded, the main feature, is part three of the Blackwater series about the Teahupo’o wave located on the south western side of Tahiti,” Tim said.
“This is no doubt the world’s most dangerous wave and when it’s on, the best surfers want a piece of it.
“It’s naturally encoded in our brains as dangerous and always associated with huge barrels that could kill you in a moment.”
