MEET Baza – one very lucky little bird indeed.
The fledgling Pacific Baza was blown down from his nest on Maria River Road in Port Macquarie.
Luckily for him, local resident John spotted his plight and called FAWNA wildlife rescue, which sent expert bird carer Paul Martin to the rescue.
Mr Martin said John and his family had done a fantastic job with Baza before he arrived.
“They observed him on their driveway on their way to town and finding that he was there hours later – still with no parents in sight – picked him up, placed him in a pet carry cage, placed him in a quiet spot and called FAWNA,” Mr Martin said.
“Helping wildlife like this spares them from being mauled by a cat or dog and allows us the chance to hospitalise them and then re-introduce them to the wild.
“If we look after our wildlife and their habitat, we can help stop the continuing trend of our critters becoming extinct.”
Paul said FAWNA carers had three Pacific Bazas in care at the moment.
“They are predominately frog and insect eaters, so finding enough of the right food for them while in care is always a challenge,” he said.
Anyone finding injured or orphaned wildlife can contact FAWNA volunteer wildlife rescue on 6581 4141.
