Power in customers’ hands

HASTINGS residents have been urged to shop around for their electricity and gas to make sure they are choosing the best deal available.
Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said the marketplace for electricity and gas had never been more competitive, meaning NSW customers had a greater range of products and deals available to them than ever before.
“However, these deals are only of benefit if people take the time to research what’s out there and pick what would best suit them,” Mrs Williams said.
Mrs Williams said that with the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) placing a cap on the fee electricity retailers could charge customers for leaving their contract early, power was handed back to customers.
“The decision by IPART to cap early termination fees means that for the first time customers now have certainty when they sign up to a contract, and will have more confidence to examine and potentially sign up to a better deal.
“This will improve competition across the marketplace as retailers offer better contracts to keep hold of existing customers and try to attract new ones.
“It’s a simple change, but it puts the customer back in the driving seat and lets them determine what is and isn’t a reasonable gas or electricity contract.”
