Lions happy with this snag

WHEN it comes to cooking sausages, members of the Lions Club are pretty well up there with the best, but even they will be breathing a sigh of relief when the next couple of weekends are over.
The Port Macquarie Tacking Point Lions Club is embarking on a marathon series of barbecue fund-raisers, kicking off this Sunday 23 February with ‘the world’s biggest barbecue’ during the Beatles Festival in Port Macquarie.
The following weekend, 1 and 2 March, they have a two-day session at Bunnings.
Somewhere along the way they also have to squeeze in a mid-week sausage sizzle at TAFE, a regular fund-raising event.
Lions zone president Neill Tubb said he personally loved sausages but even he would have had enough of them to last him a while by the end.
“But it’s all for the good causes that Lions supports,” he said.
“The money raised from the first barbecue will go to the Children’s Cancer Foundation and then the funds from the Bunnings one will go to Donate Life.”
Fittingly, he expected the world’s biggest barbecue to be their biggest food preparation event to date.
“We served more than 1000 sausage or bacon-and-egg sandwiches and other items at Australia Day, but I think this will beat that,” he said.
The world’s biggest barbecue is part of the Beatles Festival, so you’ll find the Lions Club volunteers cooking away in Westport Park this Sunday from about 6.30am. A plate of bacon, egg, sausage and baked beans will set you back $10; vegetarian patties are also available. From about 9.30am until 3pm they will revert to a standard Lions-style barbecue, which will include roast rolls from around $5.
There will be plenty of entertainment to check out at the Westport Park after breakfast, including a classic car show from 10am.
The following weekend Lions will be at Bunnings in Port Macquarie from around 8.30am to 4pm each day. However, this will be a little easier on the Tacking Point volunteers because it will involve all six clubs in the zone.
Mr Tubb said around 39 Tacking Point volunteers in total would be involved in the preparation and cooking at the two events.
I’m not quite sure how much food, but it’s a lot,” he said.
Volunteers at any of the events are always happy to talk to prospective new members.
“We would love to see some more new members in the Laurieton area in particular,” Mr Tubb said.
“We do a lot more than cooking – it’s a really great, social club to be part of.”
