Age is on their side

Bruce Thomson, centre, was Best Clubman.

THE Golden Oldies rugby players proved yet again that they’ll let nothing get between them and having a good time when they took to the field on Saturday.
Despite the heavy rain, players from nine different clubs from as far afield as Eastwood and Grafton fronted as planned for the Port Macquarie Seaside Classic Gala Day, which was staged at Stuart Park.
Spokesperson Michael Reed said the wet weather provided players with plenty of excuses for poor ball skills, but didn’t dampen their enthusiasm.
“All games were played in the Golden Oldies spirit of fun, friendship and fraternity and conclude with the scores being even, regardless of how many tries were scored,” Mr Reed said.
As one would expect, plenty of port was consumed during the day – both before, during and after matches.
In the evening all the teams gathered for a dinner at the Waterfront restaurant to party the night away. Highlights of the evening including local player Bruce Thomson being named Best Clubman for the Vintage Ports.
The next big event on the Vintage Port’s calendar is a barbecue and recruitment day on Saturday 15 March starting at 11am, also at Stuart Park.
“Come down for a sausage, a cold drink and a chat. We would love to meet you,” Mr Reed said.
“When you become a member we will include you on our email list advising you of upcoming events.”
