LOCAL cancer patients will benefit from a community fundraising drive supported by Hastings Co-op’s IGA supermarket in Port Macquarie.
The Gordon Street supermarket is part of IGA’s Community Chest Program, which thanks to local shoppers has raised $1680 for the North Coast Cancer Institute.
Hastings Co-op IGA store manager Lelsey Keft said her customers had supported three worthy causes – the North Coast Cancer Institute, Tacking Point Surf Life Saving Club and Westport High School Support Unit – by choosing to buy products with the Community Chest logo on the label.
“Our beneficiaries are all deserving recipients, and our donations are one way of saying thank you for the great work they do in our community,” Ms Keft said.
North Coast Cancer Institute nurse unit manager Jenny Baroutis accepted the donation on behalf of the oncology unit’s staff and patients.
“Oncology donations make a world of difference to our patients,” Ms Baroutis said.
“The funding allows us to buy the specialised equipment and services that we know people affected by cancer want and need.
“There is a lot of good news in cancer treatment and survival rates, and much of it is due to wonderful community support for research, staff education and cancer support services.”
