Roads boost plan

Widening Ocean Drive is one project on the list.

A BALANCED budget that includes an additional $1.4 million investment in roads and footpaths has formed the backbone of the draft 2014-2015 One Year Operational Plan will be available for public comment over six weeks.
Council voted at last week’s meeting to place the draft 2014-2015 One Year Operational Plan along with the Fees and Charges and Revenue Policy on public exhibition between Friday 21 March and Friday 2 May 2014.
The community engagement will include a workshop with the Community Reference Group and Community Drop In Information Sessions in Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Laurieton. Copies will be available at all council offices and libraries.
The Operational Plan outlines all the activities and programs council will conduct during the next financial year.
Discussing the report before council, mayor Peter Besseling said the focus was firmly on efficient and relevant services that meet the community needs.
“The councillors have received a clear message from the community regarding investment in roads and footpaths and addressing the financial sustainability of the organisation.
“This draft One Year Operational Plan for 2014 – 2015 and the associated budget addresses both of those issues while still achieving an $80 million investment in major capital works and infrastructure projects,” Cr Besseling said.
The capital works budget includes projects such as the replacement of Stingray Creek Bridge and upgrade to the Port Macquarie Indoor Stadium as well as major road works on Hastings River Drive, Houston Mitchell Drive and Ocean Drive and the continuation of the small town sewerage program.
“By spending an additional $1.4 million on roads and footpaths above and beyond the $1 million increase last financial year, we will be able start addressing the issues raised by the independent review of our road network conducted last year.
“This money has come from multiple sources including bringing forward money from reserves and increases in development contributions.”
Copies of the One Year Operational Plan 2014-2015 will be available at all council offices and libraries and can be downloaded from council’s engagement website PMHCListening. Online submissions and discussion can be made through the website.
Drop in Community Information Sessions are scheduled for:
* Wauchope Library – Monday 7 April 10.30am – 12.30pm
* Port Macquarie Council offices – Thursday 3 April 10.30am – 12.30pm
* Laurieton School of Arts Hall – Tuesday 15 April 10.30am -12.30pm
Presentations will also be made to interested community groups and organisations.
“The documents are now easier to read with the capital works program and budget incorporated and all new activities clearly identified,” Cr Besseling said.
“I’d encourage the community to take some time to read the draft One Year Operational Plan, participate in the engagement activities and have their say about what Council will deliver on your behalf next financial year,” Cr Besseling.
