Virtually enlightening

Reality art - here this month.

THROUGHOUT May, the Glasshouse, in conjunction with dLux MediaArts, is hosting (Un)seen Sculptures, a mobile 3D augmented reality art show.
The exhibition is being staged in locations throughout the Port Macquarie CBD, and features works by Australian artists and international visitors from as far afield as the USA, China, Portugal, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Virtual digital works have been located through Port Macquarie’s CBD; hidden from the naked eye but visible to anyone with a smartphone and an app called the Layar Reality Browser which can be downloaded for free.
Once they have downloaded this app, people can simply open it up, search for “unseen”, select the layer set up for the show, then hold up their phones at the designated locations, and they will see 3D artworks. When these artworks are “touched”, further information about them will be revealed and other forms of interaction may be unlocked.
The locations for (Un)seen Sculptures can be found on the exhibition map available from the Glasshouse box office.
If you’re intrigued by mobile augmented reality art in general, and want to find out what’s been done in this field elsewhere in the world, follow some of the links in the AR Art Links box in right-hand sidebar of the (Un)seen Sculptures website.
If you want to create your own mobile augmented reality art, visit the DIY section of the (Un)seen Sculptures website to learn more.
For a walking/talking introduction to this unusual exhibition, come along to the Art Tour on Saturday 3 May, at 11am. This is a free event and bookings are essential, call the Glasshouse on 6581 8888. The tour will commence in the Glasshouse foyer, at 11am.
