Club meets as things get nippy

A locally grown maple.

THE Wauchope Bonsai Group’s next meeting is on Saturday 10 May, commencing at 10am and going until 3pm.
The group meets in the Community Arts Hall, Oxley Lane, Wauchope.
This month’s meeting will feature a display of maples. The meeting will commence with a discussion of the display trees, followed by a demonstration about Japanese and Trident maples. The remainder of the meeting is workshop time for members to work on their own trees and a separate one-hour session for beginners to learn the basics of bonsai care and creation.
Visitors are welcome and beginners are encouraged to bring along one of their trees.
The group is an excellent way to learn how to create your own bonsai, or to care for the ones you already have.
Jobs to do this month are:
* As winter approaches, the trees are shutting down in readiness for the cool weather. There is no point fertilising trees now as they will not make use of it until spring.
* It is also time to ease up on repotting of evergreen trees and conifers as there is little warmth left in the soil to encourage root growth.
* Instead, get your supplies ready for an onslaught of repotting of deciduous trees in later winter and early spring.
