In brief
RESIDENTS of the North Shore area are being encouraged to have their say next month as part of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s Engaging and Communicating With Our Community program.
A ‘meet and greet the councillors’ afternoon tea will be held at 5.30pm on Wednesday 11 June in the North Shore Rural Fire Service (RFS) station, with the meeting to commence at 6pm.
BAT PETITION
A PETITION calling on the NSW Government to develop a better management strategy to deal more effectively with flying fox infestations in urban and built-up areas has been launched by Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams.
“For years there have been many calls for something to be done about the bats living in the Kooloonbung Creek Nature Reserve in Port Macquarie with complaints about the smell, noise and potential health issues related to the bat colony,” Mrs Williams said.
EXPRESS ON THE LIST
CLAIMS in The Australian newspaper that the Port Macquarie Express newspaper is on a watch-list of 33 Fairfax papers which might be closed have been described as “speculative hype”.
In response to a request for comment from the Independent about the article, a Fairfax Media spokesman said the report was not accurate.
“Last year we announced that we were reviewing the structures of our regional business. We have made no decisions. It’s business as usual,” he said.
“The Australian is comprehensively misinformed about our commitment to our regional mastheads. Their report is just speculative hype based on materials well past their use-by date.”
The Australian reported on Monday more than 30 Fairfax newspapers were under review for possible closure.
