Helpers in the spotlight

The Lions Club were out in force: John Fulton, Tracey Reynolds, Wendy Smith, Lynne Overton, Jan Grimmond and Scott Barnes.

THE 2014 Port Volunteer Expo held at the Maritime Museum in Port Macquarie on Saturday 10 May was hailed a successful start to National Volunteer week, which runs from 12 to 16 May.
Hosted by the Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre and Volunteer Centre, 30 organisations were represented from the not-for-profit world of volunteering and the day was well attended by almost 300 people of all ages, keen to find out about the options for volunteering locally.
Centre co-ordinator Beck Miles said the festival was full of vibrant conversations, happy exhibitors and enthusiastic potential volunteers.
“It marks the start of an annual outdoor event,” she said.
“The wonderful not-for-profit organisations we work with got the chance to showcase their services and volunteering options.
“The Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre values the contribution that volunteers make every day.”
Ms Miles said there are a number of positives which come out of volunteering.
“You get to become an active community member, learn new skills, meet new people and contribute in ways you never thought possible,” she said.
Lisa Williams from Lifeline Mid Coast said it was fantastic speaking to so many potential volunteers, all eager to engage with their community.
“More than six million volunteers together form a formidable workforce, powering many essential community, environmental, sporting, welfare, emergency services, education and cultural services and supports,” she said.
