THE new Hastings Secondary College is rapidly taking shape.
Planning to amalgamate Westport and Port Macquarie High School to create the new college has accelerated with the arrival of newly appointed principal Dr Wayne Ible.
Dr Ible has met with the whole staff from both high schools and outlined his philosophy and strategy for the future.
He is meeting with senior executive members from both schools daily.
With Terry Mundy’s appointment as the head teacher responsible for bringing the scheme to fruition, work is continuing in many areas simultaneously.
An information night will be held at Rydges Hotel on 17 June to inform interested parents of the many extra opportunities that will be available to senior students.
An information booklet will be available before that date so students can start exploring the choices offered.
Lessons exploring possible careers are being planned and parents will be invited to half-hour interviews with their children to explore subject choices.
As part of this process, the captains and other senior students from both schools met recently for a photo shoot.
This was the first occasion leaders from both schools had met.
Mr Mundy is co-ordinating numerous other activities that need to be the same at both schools.
The length of lesson times has been agreed to and will now be one hour.
Daily start and finish times are being explored with the bus companies.
School policies and roll marking are just two of the many other items that will need synchronising in the weeks ahead.
Dr Ible has drafted a timeline outlining a schedule for meetings and indicating when all parts of the planning process will be implemented.
