A MAN on a mission passed through Port Macquarie earlier this week.
Andy Owen stopped off on Tuesday afternoon on his way past during a 1000km stand-up paddle expedition from North Bondi to Mudjimba Beach on the Sunshine Coast.
The Big Paddle for Leukaemia was inspired by Andy’s close friend and great mate Nigel, who was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, a form of blood cancer.
“Nigel underwent two bone marrow transplants after diagnosis,” Andy said.
“The cost of treatment resulted in great financial difficulties for his family – that’s when I decided I had to do something to contribute.
“The aim is to raise $100 for every kilometre of the journey.
“I hope the big paddle will help bring much needed awareness and also raise the much-needed funds for Aussies facing a similar battle.”
When he called into Port on Tuesday Andy had raised more than $20,000 towards his target.
He is still looking for some big corporate sponsors, but would appreciate any donation, however big or small.
He can be supported by donating on www.bigpaddleleukaemia.com.
The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the care and cure of those diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders.
No ongoing government funding is received and the foundation relies on community support to fund services and research for better treatments and a cure.
All services are provided at no cost to those living with blood cancer.
