Farmer heads sports night of achievement

Ultra-marathon runner Pat Farmer will be a special guest tomorrow night.

AUSTRALIA’S Pat Farmer, the world’s most respected ultra-marathon runner and the first and only person to run from the North Pole to the South Pole, will be the inspirational guest speaker at the Westport Club’s 2013 Sports Awards presentation dinner tomorrow night.
Club community co-ordinator Jenny Edmunds said Farmer’s presence would make the night an unforgettable celebration.
She said the Westport Club 2013 Annual Sports Awards presentation dinner would celebrate and acknowledge the many achievements of the past 12 months for the club’s sporting sub and affiliated clubs.
She said that this year’s nominations were probably the highest standard they had received to date.
“This is a reflection of the prestige status these awards have gained since their introduction in 2008,” she said.
From the record number of nominations, the judges have made their final decisions on this year’s awards for: Sports Volunteer of the Year, Club/Association of the Year, Team of the Year, Spirit of Sport, Junior Sportsperson of the Year and Senior Sportsperson of the Year.
Nominations were received from all sporting codes that are sponsored, including rugby, netball, soccer, bowls and cricket. Clubs include Pirates Rugby Union, Port Saints Netball, Hastings River District Junior Cricket, Westport bowling clubs, Port Saints Soccer and Hastings River District Cricket.
The dinner will be held in the Hastings Room at The Westport Club from 6.30pm. Contact the club for more information.
