Kids make friends on the fly

A LARGE number of kites made by Japanese students are hanging on flag poles in the Armidale mall.
The installation of kites complements an exhibition called Koinobori that opened last Friday at the New England Regional Art Museum.
The exhibition is a collaboration between Japanese fashion designer and artist Taichiro Takamatsu and early childhood educators and artists Naoyuki Ishigaand, Margaret Brooks and Christine McMillan.
“Kodomo no hi, or Children’s Day, is a traditional Japanese festival celebrated on 5 May each year,” Ms McMillan said.
“Families fly koinobori banners in the shape of a carp for each child in their house.
“In Japanese folklore, the carp is a symbol of determination and vigour, overcoming all obstacles to swim upstream.”
