DUI figures a warning to all drivers

About 9pm on February 25 a 22-year-old male was stopped by police for the purpose of a breath test on Yamba Road, Palmers Island.
He returned a positive roadside breath test and subsequent checks on the man’s licence also revealed he was an unaccompanied learner driver.
He was later charged in relation to the incident.
He was one of 187 people Police arrested for drink-driving during the three day “Drink Drive 1” operation across the state.
Operation Drink Drive 1 began last Thursday, February 23 and concluded at 11.59pm on Saturday, February 25.
A total of 5099 traffic infringement notices (not speed) were issued while 2125 infringement notices were issued for speeding offences.
Highway Patrol Command Superintendent Stuart Smith said too many motorists are still flouting the law.
“Unfortunately a small number of people still decided to break the law,” he said.
“Nearly 200 motorists have been caught drink-driving during the three-day operation – not just putting themselves at risk but every other road user,” he said.
