A first sod ceremony was held to mark the start of building a new memorial for all Nashos and their families to have a peaceful and restful area to reflect on members who have passed on.
The ceremony was staged by an enthusiastic group of National Servicemen and their partners.
It was a case of history repeating itself, when President Merv took the first step and dug the first sod in what will be a new memorial to all those Nashos who paid the ultimate sacrifice or have since passed on through sickness or other health issues.
The new memorial will be in black granite with gold lettering and will replace the current one built on the banks of the Hastings River under a gum tree in McInherney Par, Port Macquarie.
Materials from the current memorial will be incorporated into the new one.
Once the memorial is completed, a full dedication service will be held later in the year.
