Anti-violence key to Intl Women’s Day speech

Former Member for Port Macquarie and current President of NRMA Motoring and Services, Wendy Machin, will return to the Mid-North Coast to speak at the Hastings Heroines event on International Women’s Day, Friday, March 8 at the CWA Function Room.

Attendees will also hear from guest speaker Kylie Dowse who runs the ‘Community Partnerships Against Domestic and Family Violence’ project through the Hastings Women and Children’s Refuge.

Kelly Lamb, President of the Hastings Business Women’s Network, who is hosting the event
in partnership with Leslie Williams MP, said both speakers would draw on their inspirational backgrounds to share stories around the theme of the event, ‘Empowering Women’.

“Ms Machin is an accomplished business woman, board member of numerous organisations, successful beef cattle farmer and the first female member of the National Party elected to NSW Parliament,” Mrs Lamb said.

“A former Director of Save the Children Australia and a past member of the National Council for
the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, Wendy
has kindly lent her support to our event, which is once again raising much-needed funding for the refurbishment of the Hastings Women and Children’s Refuge.

“Ms Dowse oversees the operation of a number
of projects which last year helped more than 5000 people across the Mid-North Coast, including specialist domestic and family violence support rooms
in Kempsey, Port Macquarie and Taree Police Stations, LOVE BiTES relationship workshops for over
1000 students, and the MEND and Insight Programs for men who have used violence in their relationships.”

The event will also feature the naming of several
new ‘Hastings Heroines’ in recognition of t
he contribution they have made to the local community.
