Community fears over train changes

That Countrylink train services to Taree, Kendall and Wauchope will be slashed is scaremongering at its lowest, says a local MP.

Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams claims, “I have had a number of people contact my office upset about a petition organised by the Opposition Spokesperson for Transport, Penny Sharpe, about the future of local Countrylink services.

“The petition also infers that the Liberals and Nationals Government is to privatise the Countrylink service,” Mrs Williams said.

“I repeat what I said in August last year and that is, it’s not this Government’s policy to privatise CountryLink. What we are doing is fixing the mess left behind by the previous Labor Government.

“Part of that plan was to create NSW trains to provide regional train services – of which CountryLink is a part.

“By running around making out-landish claims that rail services will be cut at Taree, Kendall and Wauchope,
the Labor Party is simply scaring local people who use the Countrylink services to Sydney and Brisbane,” Mrs Williams said.

“I stress to people living in our local community, there are no plans to cut Countrylink services.

“The Government is committed to enhancing regional public transport, not cutting it, as the former Government did,” Mrs Williams said.
