Man dies trying to save best mate

Sadness lingers in Port Macquarie after builder and popular local citizen Dennis Bax was killed in a car accident last week.
The accident happened five kilometres south of the Oxley Highway at about 3.30pm  when his Jeep, travelling north on the Pacific Highway, Lake Innes, left the roadway and hit a tree in the centre island.
Several passers-by stopped to provide assistance but the 62-year-old driver, Mr Bax, suffered severe injuries and sadly died at Port Macquarie Base Hospital.
His passenger, his 62-year-old wife, Jane, was treated at Port Macquarie Base Hospital for soreness to her shoulders.
Northbound motorists were advised to use Ocean Drive and the Oxley Highway to return to the Pacific Highway at the time of the incident.
Southbound motorists were not affected.
The northbound lanes of the Pacific Highway were reopened at Lake Innes early in the evening.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner following the fatal single vehicle collision.
Inquiries into the crash are continuing.
