An innovative new parking system in the Port Macquarie CBD, said to revolutionise parking management, has been installed.
On Monday, the new in-ground units, embedded beneath parking spots went live in all time-limited spaces throughout the Port Macquarie CBD.
Highly visible signage at all locations will explain that the systems are in use.
Council’s Director of Development and Environment, Matt Rogers said the availability of parking in Port Macquarie’s CBD was becoming an increasingly important issue in the community.
“Council acknowledges the importance of ensuring a constant turnover of parking spaces in time restricted parking areas,” Mr Rogers said.
Council’s Team Leader, Ranger Services Ian Chetcuti said each device was programmed with relevant data for the bay, including the time limit, operating hours, location and time, relaying accurate records to Rangers via a hand-held device when a car has overstayed.
“The vehicle overstay detection systems will reduce the need for officers to mark tyres and monitor parking times manually,” Mr Chetcuti said.
A 10 day grace period, which has now ended, has allowed time for the public to become familiar with the new technology.
Data was also collected during this time using the new sensor system which has provided Council with information to allow a more informed planning process for parking management in the future within the Local Government Area.
No changes are being made to the parking conditions in the nominated areas, with all parking restrictions to remain the same.
