Cassegrain’s champion crop

Cassegrain Wines has received the very welcome news that it was awarded the distinction of Champion Winery at the New England Wine show.
This is a real endorsement of Cassegrain Wines and in particular, highlights the depth of wine quality across the Cassegrain portfolio.
The Champion Winery honour is awarded to the winery that receives the broadest cross section of awards across all classes. From a submission of 16 wines, 14 wines received medals.
The winery won medals across all the price points, including a bronze medal for the recently released Stone Circle sparkling Rose.  In the premium range the Semillon, Shiraz and Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon all received awards. Both the Edition Noir and Reserve ranges were also well represented in the medal take, including gold medals for the 2005 Gewurztraminer and 2008 Reserve Shiraz .
According to John Cassegrain, it is the attention to detail and a general commitment towards quality that underpins this result.
“I have to say, after 25 years of exporting wine to Japan, who are renowned for demanding the highest quality standards, they have been a major influence in our wine production. This now augers well to further develop our export market to China.”
While Cassegrain Wines is a multi-regional producer sourcing grapes from a range of regions in NSW, it is especially pleasing to see wines from the local Hasting River fruit do really well. The Cassegrain 2007 Premium Semillon won the award for best non-aromatic wine of show. The newly released sparkling Chambourcin also did well, as did the 2012 Hasting River Edition Noir Semillon.
Alex Cassegrain, who has taken on the role of assisting his father as winemaker and who recently graduated from Adelaide University, says, “It is particularly pleasing to see the newly released sparkling Chambourcin receive a medal at its inaugural wine show. Cassegrain Wines pioneered Chambourcin in Australia and believes that Hastings River Chambourcin is well suited for sparkling wine.”
Of the 14 medal winners, 10 are available from the Cassegrain Cellar door and on line. The other  four medal winners are yet to be released.
