8 local teachers face sack after cutbacks

At least eight teachers and support staff from the Port Macquarie education office will be sacked as part of the State Government’s $1.7 billion cut to education funding in NSW.
Shadow Education Minister Carmel Tebbutt was in Port Macquarie on Friday  meeting with representatives of public and non government schools as well as TAFE representatives about the Government’s$1.7 billion funding cut to education in NSW.
Internal departmental documents obtained by the NSW Opposition revealed eight specialist staff from Port Macquarie — along with 353 other specialist staff across the State — will be axed as part of the education cuts.
“These are outrageous cuts that will strip teachers and support staff out of the Port Macquarie region,” Ms Tebbutt said today.
“Sacking education experts and curriculum specialists from Port Macquarie will mean less support and assistance for classroom teachers in the region.
Ms Tebbutt also said the loss of local teachers and support staff was made public on the same day it was revealed the O’Farrell Government had wasted $100,000 changing the name of the Department of Education and Training to the Department of Education and Communities.
