THE University of the Third Age has received $50,000 in the 2013 federal budget to go towards building works at its Port Macquarie campus.
Independent Lyne MP Rob Oakeshott congratulated U3A Port Macquarie on the funding allocation in what he described as a “tough, tight budget”.
“U3A is now the fastest growing adult education sector in Australia. The Port Macquarie campus has some 750 members, and that number is expected to grow by another 500 once the renovation work is complete at the new campus, the former St Agnes Lodge,” Mr Oakeshott said.
“I have met on several occasions with vice-president Frank Jennings and the crew from Port Macquarie’s U3A, who have put forward a compelling case to transform the former dementia care centre into something special – a new home for U3A’s members.
“I hope this money helps the committee achieve its goal, and I also hope it helps promote this wonderful example of life-long learning in our community.”
The building conversion will involve removing walls, rewiring and wiring installation to allow for teaching and IT courses. Three lecture rooms, meeting and craft rooms, a reception area and IT classroom.
