Rugby heavyweight appears at local campaign fundraiser

Author, former national rugby union great and raconteur Peter FitzSimons was in Port Macquarie last week to support a campaign fundraiser for the Member for Port Macquarie, Peter Besseling.
The man known for his witty banter and rivetting anecdotes, wore his trademark bandana as he took to centre stage at the Players Theatre, and introduced himself to the 100-strong audience as Today co-host Lisa Wilkinson’s husband.
“I’m told by many of my mates the fact that I married Lisa makes me president of the Australian Men Punching Well Above Their Weight,” FitzSimons started.
“After meeting Meagan [Besseling], Peter Besseling should be vice-president.”
The big personality, with a remarkable memory for dates, names and places, talked about a number of subjects, from the light-hearted to the serious, from his choice of a world rugby team of famous names not known for their rugby skills, including Meat Loaf, Bill Clinton and Pope John Paul II, to the vilification and hatred promulgated by some of Australia’s biggest names on radio.
Mr Besseling said the evening had been a fantastic success.
