Governance expert to keynote Business Forum

With many in the community turning their minds to local council elections in September 2012, the local Chamber of Commerce is starting the conversation early on councillor roles and responsibilities.
Key speaker at the August 23 Business Forum will be governance expert John Dugas.
Working with the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Mr Dugas lectures on governance and the roles and responsibilities of company directors and councillors, including in not-for-profit organisations. He is also a former Councillor in the Gloucester Shire and a lecturer in the Business and Law Faculty at the University of Newcastle.
Port Chamber Executive Officer Liesa Davies said the local chambers were very keen to ensure that people who may be thinking about standing for election are well informed about what it takes to be a good councillor and community representative.
“It’s an important role and takes a lot of commitment — especially for those who are also trying to manage a successful business at the same time,” she said.
“Everyone wants to see a good pool of councillor candidates and strong and stable leadership, so we believe it’s important to be starting these conversations early.”
Also speaking at the forum will be Port Macquarie Hastings Council Administrator, Neil Porter. Neil will share his views on what’s involved in being a councillor and upcoming formal education opportunities for prospective councillors. Deputy Mayor of Kempsey Shire Liz Campbell will also be sharing her perspective on effectively managing council, community and personal business interests.
The Business Forum is hosted by the Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Camden Haven Chambers of Commerce and the Mid-North Coast NSW Business Chamber.
The forum is open to all members of the community, from 6pm on Tuesday, August 23, at Pier One, Panthers Port Macquarie. The cost to attend is $20 (includes beverages and hot finger food).  Attendees must book their seat via the link at www.portchamber.com.au/calendar
