A cheque for $5000 has been handed over to the Louis Ballangarry Memorial Committee by the NSW Government to assist with its Charity Day Events.
The Committee was established six years ago following the passing of Louis Ballangarry, to embrace the ideology and work of Louis Ballangarry following his passing.
Louis Ballangarry was a well-known and respected Aboriginal elder in the Nambucca community who worked tirelessly to encourage young people to divert their attention and energies into local sport.
He was the first Aboriginal to hold the position of Surf Club President of the Macksville/Scotts Head Surf Life Saving Club and became involved in a broad range of sporting and youth activities.
To date, the committee had raised more than $50,000 for the Louis Ballangarry Memorial Charity Day, helping local junior sporting clubs to grow.
Deputy Premier, Nationals Leader and Member for Oxley Andrew Stoner said, “When I was approached by my good friend and local councillor, Michael “Cactus” Moran before his passing a few months ago, about any assistance the government might be able to provide to the committee, I wrote to the Premier and I was delighted that he has responded with this assistance.”
