To celebrate NAIDOC Week recently, Kairi Wilmot, a well-known member of the Koori local Aboriginal community and Cancer Council staff member, welcomed community members to a morning tea held at Cancer Council’s Mid-North Coast office.
A cake especially decorated with the Aboriginal flag was cut by Kerry Childs, Cancer Council Mid-North Coast Regional Advisory Committee member and Bellingen Shire Councillor.
Cancer Council is committed to improving the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people where cancer is one of the major causes of disease and death in Aboriginal communities and Aboriginal people are 60 per cent more likely to die from their cancer compared to non-Aboriginal people.
The morning tea presented an opportunity for Cancer Council to show its support for NAIDOC Week and the Close the Gap campaign.
