Home and Community Care Services $83,000 upgrade

An $83,000 grant will see vast improvements at the Home and Community Care Services in Laurieton.
The Laurieton HACC facility, on the corner of Laurie and Norman Streets, will be upgraded to include a purpose built commercial style kitchen and improved access, particularly to the centre’s doors and bathroom facilities.
Council’s Aged and Disability Community Development Officer, Julie Priest, says a working  party contributed to the successful grant submission which will deliver the facility upgrade that has long been identified as vital.
“HACC services include Meals on Wheels, Hastings District Respite Care and Social Seniors, which provide care services for frail or at risk aged persons and younger disabled persons who live at home but are at risk of not maintaining independent living. Representatives from many of these agencies worked with Council to identify the Laurieton centre’s future needs and potential funding opportunities.
“In practical terms, the funding will see the kitchen upgraded and potentially allow a Meals on Wheels classroom kitchen to operate. Wider entry doors to the building will enable access for people with a disability and the provision of a compliant accessible toilet and shower will create a safe and dignified environment. It will provide increased opportunities for intergenerational activities and projects with groups using the facility,” said Ms Priest.
This project will be jointly funded by the Federal Government and the NSW State Government as represented by Ageing, Disability and Homecare in the Department of Family & Community Services. It was approved by the Minister for Ageing and Minister for Disability Services as part of Round 2 of the HACC Capital Strategy. With intensified demand on this facility, the upgrading will enable services to provide care and social activities for seniors, frail or at risk aged persons and younger people with a disability.
“Council’s Building Services section will oversee the project and manage the proposed works through from design to construction, commissioning and handover. Council will consult closely with the HACC services to ensure that the new works are practical and best suit their programs. The upgrade is scheduled to be completed mid-2012,” concluded Ms Priest.
