Breakthrough in sexual assault cold case

A man has been charged with the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl at Port Macquarie 18 years ago.
On 30 April 1993, a 15-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man near Kooloonbung Creek on Hollingsworth Street, Port Macquarie.
During the incident the girl was allegedly detained, threatened with a knife and sexually assaulted.
Despite extensive investigations into the matter at the time, police were unable to locate the girl’s attacker.
Earlier this year the Cold Case Justice Project conducted a review of the case including the re-examination of forensic evidence.
Police will allege a DNA link led them to identify a man involved in the incident.
About 9am last Wednesday, September 14 detectives from Port Macquarie travelled to Tweed Heads where they arrested a 50-year-old man. He was subsequently charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault with victim under 16 years, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and detain for advantage.
The man was refused bail and will appear in Tweed Heads Local Court.
