Stellar year for tourism

Port Macquarie has capped off a strong year for tourism to the region securing seven domestic and international events for 2012, expected to inject an estimated $40 million into the local economy.
The mix of sporting competition and festivals due to hit town throughout the year consolidates the packed 2011 calendar which saw 22 major events staged within the region over the past 12 months.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Tourism and Events Manager Linda Hall said the region’s ability to secure mid to long term agreements to host  events positively contributed to the large boost for the local economy.
“Out of the seven major events to be held in Port Macquarie next year, four will fill our calendar for a minimum of three years,” Ms Hall said.
Kicking off the year is the Port Macquarie Festival of Bodyboarding, which will showcase the increasingly popular sport and culminate with the International Bodyboarding Championships.
Other exciting competition to visit the region next year includes the Ironman 70.3, Australian Formula Powerboat Grand Prix, NSW Longboard Titles and the NSW Women’s Bowling Association 83rd State Carnival.
On top of hosting new events in 2012, Ms Hall said the continuation of established relationships with events and competitions was testament to the services, facilities and beautiful backdrop the Greater Port Macquarie region can provide.
“We recently secured hosting rights with the State Cup for a further five years which will see Port Macquarie’s association with the state’s premier touch football competition extend beyond 25 years,” Ms Hall said.
