Library has it all

DID you know that you can download free e-books, music and newspapers at Port Macquarie-Hastings libraries? Or that all local libraries offer a free online tutoring service for school students?
Residents are invited to celebrate their local library this week as a part of Library and Information Week celebrations across the state.
Director of Community and Organisational Development Lesley Atkinson encouraged residents to explore the new technology that has been integrated into services at Port Macquarie, Laurieton and Wauchope offices.
“Library and Information Week provides the community with the opportunity to find out about the wide range of services our local libraries have on offer, particularly the integration of new technologies,” Ms Atkinson said.
“It is also a time to recognise the vital role libraries and information services play in research and education; maintenance of our history and culture and the provision of services for people who may otherwise be disadvantaged by their lack of access to information and technology.”
Port Macquarie-Hastings residents can now connect to their local library from home. Resources such as e-books and music are available for download 24/7 from the convenience of a home computer or mobile device.
To celebrate the Week, Port Macquarie Library is holding an information session today to highlight these online services.
From 10am to noon, Port Macquarie Library staff will be demonstrating the library’s full range of resources, including:

  • Free ebooks, newspapers and music;
  • Learning a language online;
  • Accessing an online tutoring service for school students;
  • Accessing online computer courses;
  • How to Like the Library on Facebook;
  • Receiving book reservation notifications by text;
  • Subscriptions to the Library’s alert and email service for new items;
  • Advice on using the ebook service (every Tuesday afternoon at Port Macquarie Library);
  • How to borrow a Daisy Player to listen to your favourite authors if you are visually impaired; and
  • Test driving an ebook reader.
