Unleash your thoughts on proposed Dog Policy

The proposal to unleash three leash-free parks for dogs has ignited intense community response, so much so Council has extended the public exhibition of the draft policy until April 1.
Over 70 submissions have been received during the public exhibition of the draft Dogs in Public Open Spaces policy.
Under the proposed policy, Council will consider the establishment of a leash free exercise facility in each of the major residential areas of Port Macquarie, Camden Haven and Wauchope.  These facilities would be in addition to existing leash-free zones on nominated beaches.
According to Director of Development and Environmental Services, Matt Rogers the response so far to the draft policy has been evenly spread across the local government area.
“It’s really pleasing to see that so many people are taking the time to read the draft policy, review the maps and provide Council with their thoughts on a preferred site for leash-free dog exercise parks.”
The proposed sites in Port Macquarie are Boom Reserve, John Fraser Place and Tuffins Lane. In Wauchope Wilbur Trotter Reserve, Old Windmill Landfill, Narran Close Reserve and land at Bago Road have all been identified as possible suitable locations. The Camden Haven sites include Henry Kendall Reserve, Laurie Street Reserve and Stace Reserve.
“Last year we conducted considerable community engagement with dog owners and non owners. The results of that work indicated a strong desire for leash free exercise facilities in addition to beaches. We are very keen to hear what the community thinks of the proposal and I would encourage people to make a submission by 1 April,” Mr Rogers said.
