Heritage a highlight

Open House for Seniors at the Port Macquarie Historical Museum last week was a big success.
The museum offered free entry and a free bus tour with refreshments for its Seniors Week celebrations.
“We had many more visitors than usual,” said Leonie Laws, Port Macquarie Historical Society President.
“It was great to see so many people enjoying our wonderful museum and we hope they tell their friends and family so they, too, will visit us.
“We were also delighted with the response to our guided bus tours of historic sites around the town and had to change to a bigger bus at the last minute to fit everyone on.”
Over 180 seniors took the opportunity to visit the museum and the two bus tours funded by a NSW Government Ageing, Disability and Home Care grant.
“Our visitors gave us very positive comments as did our dedicated group of volunteers who were pleased to see so many visitors enjoying our displays and collection,” said Mrs Laws. “Most of our volunteers are seniors, so Seniors Week is also an opportunity to showcase their efforts in opening and maintaining our large museum and collection.”
Museum volunteers are also now busy finalising preparations for a number of Heritage Festival activities.
The Port Macquarie -Hastings & Kempsey Heritage Festival will run from April 14-29.
The Port Macquarie Historical Society is offering a number of activities including walking tours and a coffee morning talk. Further details can be found at
