Outdoor playgrounds for our kids may become smoke-free under a new policy.
Council received a $2950 grant from the NSW Cancer Council to implement a smoke-free area policy and supporting education initiatives.
The policy aims to help lower the health impact of smoking-related diseases on the community as well as address the environmental burden of cigarette butt waste.
The Cancer Council policy prohibits smoking at all children’s playgrounds, sporting fields, Council pools, beaches and alfresco dining areas.
The Cancer Council also extends its recommended smoke-free areas to include pedestrian malls and plazas, bushland, parks and reserves, bus stops and taxi ranks and Council carparks.
Director of Cultural and Community Development Lesley Atkinson said Council would progressively introduce its Smoke-Free Outdoors Areas policy as funding becomes available.
