Port Macquarie CBD residents will soon enter a new era of mobile telecommunications.
Telstra is set to switch on the nation’s first superfast 4G LTE mobile network in Port Macquarie CBD later this year.
4G was launched on Tuesday in more than 30 regional and metropolitan centres as well as capital city CBDs.
The telecommunications giant also announced that it would light up 4G network coverage in more than 50 additional locations by year’s end, including Port Macquarie’s CBD.
Independent MP for Lyne Rob Oakeshott said 4G is an example of emerging technology that hangs off, and is complementary to, the fibre network that is being built nationally.
“This is an important step for Port Macquarie, and I’ll continue to push for more examples like this one,” he said.
“We are finally starting to realise the real need for speed on the Mid-North Coast, and I welcome this announcement as another example.”
Telstra Country Wide Area General Manager North Coast NSW, Sue Passmore, said the superfast speeds mean users in Port Macquarie’s CBD will be able to download songs faster, get TV shows in minutes and do more things simultaneously.
“Telstra 4G will provide customers in Port Macquarie CBD with mobile broadband download speeds equivalent to customers who live in capital cities and in metropolitan suburban areas,” said Ms Passmore.
“This is just the beginning.
“In addition to increased download speeds, the increased bandwidth will facilitate improved quality pictures and images.
“This aspect is important to many people, such as the medical profession, where local practitioners regularly liaise with capital city specialists.”
Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams said this was a great move to improve mobile services in Port Macquarie.
“Any improvement is very welcome. It can be very frustrating for consumers in regional areas dealing with slower services speeds, so I am sure our local residents will be happy when the new 4G network commences,” she said.
“I also hope this is just the start of more improvements to come.”
Ms Passmore said Telstra Country Wide will advise Port Macquarie CBD locals when 4G will become available.
