Airport upgrade plans in Port Macquarie are finally off the ground.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council gave the green light to proceed with detailed design for the Stage One upgrade works at last week’s meeting.
Council adopted Option Two of the Council report which aims to cater for up to 180-seat B737 and A320 jet aircraft to maximise the opportunity to secure further growth and ongoing improvements in the range of air services available at Port Macquarie. Under the proposal, Council will upgrade the existing runway, taxiways and regular public transport (RPT) apron, as well as expand the existing passenger terminal building and car parking facilities to provide increased capacity to cater for peak periods.
Administrator Garry Payne said, “While Council continues to investigate funding options from the Australian Government to undertake the $25 million project, it is important that we proceed with the detailed planning and design work.
“We are also continuing to liaise closely with existing and potential new entrant airlines with a view to securing improvements in the range of air services currently available, including the introduction of B737 and A320 aircraft.
“A further report will be presented back to Council on completion of the detailed design phase, providing detailed plans, cost estimate and financing options for the Stage One works for Council to consider the timing of the capital investment required,” Mr Payne said.
