A NEW 49-tonne transformer installed at Essential Energy’s Boronia Street zone substation will ensure the power demands of West Port Macquarie, Settlement City and the industrial estate are met well into the future.
The massive transformer is responsible for converting high voltage electricity into lower voltage power for safe distribution to local homes and businesses.
Essential Energy’s regional manager North Coast, Brendon Neyland, said its installation was part of an upgrade that was necessary to ensure a safe and reliable power supply and a network able to meet the area’s continuing growth.
“The arrival of the new transformer is part of a larger upgrade to the substation that will see the replacement of aged electrical equipment with the most technically advanced equipment available today,” he said.
“Work has included the construction of an 11,000 volt switch building, which houses remotely controlled equipment that gives Essential Energy the ability to distribute power around the network, and also assists with restoration of supply in the event of an unplanned interruption in the area.
”As part of the project, a smaller transformer was moved from Boronia Street to the Owen Street zone substation to provide back-up to the Port Macquarie CBD and East Port power supplies.
“With the project almost complete, customers can look forward to a more reliable and sustainable power supply,” Mr Neyland said.
