Digging through history

Port Macquarie Historical Society member and researcher Tony Dawson will give a free talk about accessing online records and archives at the Port Macquarie Historical Museum next Tuesday.

THE Port Macquarie Historical Society is hosting a series of free history talks during the winter months.
The first will be held on Tuesday 10 June at 10.30am at the Port Macquarie Historical Museum at 22 Clarence Street, Port Macquarie to mark International Archives Day, with researcher Tony Dawson, presenting Land Records – a mine of information.
Mr Dawson said records relating to land and going back to the earliest days of the colony are becoming increasingly available to the public online and on-site through the NSW Lands Department, State Records and other repositories.
“This talk will look at what records may be accessed, how to find them, and what sort of historical information – on people, places and events – can be gleaned from them,” Mr Dawson said.
Port Macquarie Historical Society president Debbie Sommers said they held a similar talk series last year and it was quite successful.
“The talks are aimed at promoting local history and heritage to the general public and in this case the importance of keeping archives and how easy it is to access many state records and archives from the comfort of your own home,” Ms Sommers said.
“The NSW Lands Department has a treasure trove of information about local properties waiting to be explored and Tony’s talk to will explain how this can be done and will use examples to demonstrate the information that can now be found online.”
Other talks in the series are: Is my old building heritage? on Tuesday 8 July and Family history in 3D on Tuesday 5 August. All the talks will be held at the Port Macquarie Historical Museum.
