ANYONE for tennis?
Yes, it’s that time of year again – the Hastings Ladies Mid-Week Comp is kicking off soon and they would love some more players, particularly experienced competitive players for their top division.
Secretary Hazel Holt, who has been a member for 12 years, said try-out days were being staged today and again next Thursday on 13 February.
The lower division, 1b, will then start competition on 13 February or the week after, while the higher 1a division would start late February or early March.
Players are divided into three-person teams and each player plays four sets. The venue rotates between two clubs in Port Macquarie and another in Wauchope.
Matches kick off around 9am and finish about 1pm.
Hazel said the club used to have four divisions and it would be great to see numbers build so that could happen again.
“I think many sports have declined, but I think some of the problem with the mid-week tennis is that that there are a lot of people out there who play tennis but don’t want to commit to doing so every week,” she said.
“In reality, if you don’t want to play every week, there are options – you can share a position with someone else, which works really well for young mums with kids or older ladies who need to look after the grandchildren,” she said.
She said the group was also a very social and supportive one.
“We are serious on the court but very relaxed off and have a lot of fun,” said Hazel, one of five players over 70 and still playing in the comp.
“I didn’t know anyone when I moved to Port Macquarie 12 years ago but made friends straight away through the association.”
