Saturday pm: Our first day of pennants was washed out by a deluge and is rescheduled for Sunday 16 March. Good luck to all our teams next week. Sunday bowls was a dismal washout so there were a lot of long faces. Never mind folks – there are plenty more days left in the year to hone your skills.
For all the up-and-coming bowlers, there is free coaching available to everyone (12-year-olds welcome). Just turn up to the bowls office Saturday mornings at 10am. The pennant players are reminded the Bryce Stewart coaching is still on Tuesdays so please attend if possible as per last year.

Everyone gets a present and the over-80s are honoured and awarded a pin and a beautiful potted African violet, so don’t forget to put your names on the sheet. Our four-day Easter Carnival will be held from 18 to 21 April. Events are as follows. Good Friday – mixed fours, Easter Saturday – ladies’ pairs, Easter Sunday – mixed triples, Easter Monday – men’s pairs. There is still time to put your entries in.

LAKE CATHIE MEN
THE big rain washed out the opening round of the pennant season, and so round one has been re-scheduled to Sunday 16 March. Teams for round two have been posted on the noticeboard. Tick your availability or let the selectors know otherwise.
Several matches in the minor singles were played during the week. Wilf Taylor defeated Phil Innes, Ray Downes defeated Barry Bird, Rob Eldridge defeated Roger Miles; Darren White defeated Steve Webster, Stewie Hodges defeated Phil Rowe and Harry Van Weegan defeated Keith Woods. Only the match between Doug Porter and Bob Kohut needs to be played to bring us to the quarter finals.
Sunday 9 March is the next Boast ‘N’ Roast Day starting at 9.30am with a game of three-bowl mixed triples over 18 ends, followed by a delicious roast dinner. Players of all skill levels are welcome. The cost is only $15 which is great value.

LAKE CATHIE WOMEN
THIS year’s pennant season started last week with some excellent results for our girls. Last Tuesday, at home, grade one saw Yvonne Howard’s team with a win, and Anne Wilson’s with a narrow defeat, against Port City, to take four points overall. Grade two went down on both rinks against Port City. In grade four both Coral Miller and Marilyn Dewson’s teams posted good wins against Westport to gain five points, and similarly, grade five got up on both Di Spinks and Anna Innes’s rinks to also gain five points.
Meanwhile, grade three played down at Kew and also posted two rink wins with Ann Butlin’s and Maree Kitcher’s teams picking up the five points. On Thursday and Friday grades four (against Port City 2) and three (against North Haven) both gained one point for their round two games.
Semi-finals of the major pairs, some minor singles, and social games were washed out on Saturday with the weekend torrential downpours. These competition games will now be played Saturday 8 March.
There is a quarterly meeting after bowls next Tuesday 11 March. The nomination sheet for the under three-year singles competition is now up with a close date of Tuesday 18 March and the first round to be played on or before Tuesday 1 April. The next skins day will be Wednesday 19 March, and Boast ‘N’ Roast Day continues with win supporters with the next play day to be Sunday 9 March.
WESTPORT WOMEN
THE pennant season kicked off with mixed results for Westport teams! Grade one unfortunately lost, grade two had a win – both played at North Haven. Grade four had a resounding loss against Lake Cathie on Tuesday but redeemed themselves with a good win against North Haven at home. A huge thanks to Heather Tindall, who played very well in her first pennant games when she filled in for Sue Smith who was absent due to a family tragedy. We wish all players good luck in the upcoming games.
Winners and runners-up on the day were both teams from social bowlers – Faye Laut, Vivian Clive, Jan Fleming, Jean Edwards and Irene Burnham, Cath Storrier, Geraldine Lavender, Betty Cunningham, respectively.
Social bowls are played each Thursday commencing at 9.30am. Names into selectors by 1pm. Wednesday to Di Irving 6582 6262, Carol Owen 0405 417 994 or the bowls office 6588 7220.
A good crowd enjoyed twilight bowling on Tuesday evening with wins to Barry Smith and Judy Taylor. Margaret Coombes will continue these games as long as possible, so please register your name on the list in the Dolphin Room, contact her on 6581 3264 or phone the bowls office 6588 7220. Visitors welcome.
The choice of games on Sunday could have been water polo after the deluge received on Saturday. As a result all games were cancelled on Sunday. However, we will be pleased to see you all next week. You can put your name on the list in the Dolphin Room or phone the bowls office on 6588 7220 to be part of the action.
The Cracker Jak Bowls Challenge also had a damp start on Friday when eight teams attended a get to know you and sausage sizzle. Although it was too wet outside, new bowlers had a practice (carpet bowls) in the Dolphin Room. We welcome you all to the joy (and frustration) of the game and hope you will enjoy the competition games which commence this coming Friday. Contact Betty Oliver: 6583 9385.
