Show’s puffing billies

The goat-racing action starts at 10am. Be sure not to miss the politicians’ race at 11am and the radio station challenge at around 11.30am.

FOR a great day out in the country, with fresh mountain air and magnificent scenery, grab your Akubra hat and R.M. Williams boots and head for the Comboyne Show later this month.
Proudly resented by the Comboyne Agricultural and Horticultural Association, the 77th Comboyne Show will be held on Saturday 15 March and promises to be a day of fun for all the family, with some enjoyable and informative experiences, plus some surprises, starting with Comboyne’s unique mountain goat racing program.
The goat racing was suggested by show president Rod Fisher in 2010 and – while some members of the committee were dubious at first – it has been a real hit. The racing has gradually become more and more professional and the goats now pull purpose-built sulkies and have a soft run-off area to pull up in.
Show-goers can enjoy all the action with uninterrupted views from the shady marquees.
Sundial Dental has come on board as major sponsor with such enthusiastic about the racing that Dr Peter Elfar and his staff have participated and been individual race winners in 2012 and 2013.
The politicians’ race has enticed various local, State and Federal government members of both sexes into the jockey seat and is always a popular and entertaining event, as is the $500 Radio Station Charity Challenge Race which 2MC’s Mark Strachan won last year. Mark is very keen for a repeat victory this year so the competition is likely to be fierce and worth watching.
Show-goers can get into the action through the Calcutta held before each race, with the winner receiving 80 per cent of the pool.
Of course, there is a whole lot more to see at the 2014 Comboyne Show, including a championship dog show and exhibits from poultry to produce, cooking to craft, fabulous flowers and photography and the popular people’s choice art award, great rides for the kids and entertainment by a duo from the Wauchope Youth Theatre Group. Food and drink are not forgotten – luncheon room co-ordinator Mary Nelson will be offering country-cooked cakes and slices, Devonshire teas, light lunches and coffee and there will also be a country barbecue and bar.
Entry is only $5 for adults, children under 16 years enter for free and there is plenty of free parking.
See you at the show!
